Strategic Search & Management in Research

This presentation provides foundational information on searching the literature, specifically PubMed, and on organizing citations using Zotero. The title "Big Rocks First!" illustrates how projects, such as research including case studies, fit together better when the big rocks (i.e., quality search and citation management) are put in place at the beginning. The rest of the information (sand) in the research fills in the space around this foundation.

Learner Outcomes:

• By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to formulate effective research questions using the PICO framework.
• By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to verbalize how to construct advanced search strings using Boolean operators, quotation marks, and parentheses.
• By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to organize and manage references using tools like Zotero for efficient research documentation. ​

Dr. Marian “Marnie” Reven is a passionate leader, change agent, and lover of life with her husband and family in the Appalachian region of the US. Marnie is a Professor of Nursing at West Virginia University, and both a Certified and a Registered AromatherapistTM. She is a published researcher and has written for publication enough times to know that starting with the end in mind is of great importance. Dr. Reven mentors up-and-coming researchers and supports them as they work to share their findings in aromatherapy and related fields.
