AIA Research Academy - Validity and Reliability: Testing a Test with Bruce Boynton, MD, PhD, MPH

Validity and Reliability are Important: Testing a Test

with Bruce Boynton, MD, PhD, MPH

After a brief introduction to tests in general, we will learn to calculate accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and predictive value with a matrix. We will link these results to a discussion about Type 1 and Type 2 errors, the multiple comparisons problem, and prevalence and incidence of the condition.

Learner Outcomes:

  • Evaluate a test using the confusion matrix.

  • Understand the effect of prevalence and incidence on test evaluation.

  • Understand and be able to explain Type 1 and Type 2 errors.

Dr. Boynton, MD, PhD has had a distinguished career as a pediatrician, physiologist, researcher, naval officer, and hospital CEO.
