Denise Cusack presents the use of aromatherapy as an empowering tool in disaster relief and trauma recovery, with a focus on underserved communities.
The session introduces trauma-informed care principles, emphasizing safety, choice, and empowerment. Attendees will explore the physical and emotional impacts of trauma and how aromatherapy supports stress, anxiety, sleep, and immune function. Practical, self-care tools such as inhalers, rollerballs, chest rubs, salves, and sprays are covered, along with real-world examples from free clinics and disaster relief efforts. We will highlight accessible, sustainable approaches to recovery, offering practical knowledge for integrating aromatherapy into community outreach and trauma-informed practices.
Denise Cusack is a clinical herbalist, certified aromatherapist, natural perfumer, and permaculture designer with over 20 years of experience in natural health and wellness. As Executive Director of Herbalists Without Borders (HWB), Denise leads initiatives to advance health equity and wellness through grassroots projects, education, and mutual aid. She manages HWB’s US Donation Distribution Network, distributing herbal remedies, aromatherapy supplies, and care kits to free clinics, disaster relief efforts, and community outreach programs. Denise also leads the Community Supported Aromatherapy Program, equipping Coordinators with tools, education, and resources to bring aromatherapy to underserved communities, including those impacted by trauma.
At Wholly Rooted Farm, a United Plant Savers Botanical Sanctuary, Denise grows over 250 species of medicinal and aromatic herbs, as well as food crops, to support community resilience. Her work focuses on empowering communities, promoting health equity, and sharing the benefits of herbalism and aromatherapy through sustainable practices, education, and mutual aid. Denise is dedicated to serving the underserved and building collaborative models that inspire resilience and wellness.
