This is a conversation about how we know what works and does not work. There are varying perspectives. Where you stand depends on where you sit. For practitioners working with individual patients, a drug or treatment works if it relieves the symptoms for that client at that time. For researchers it is much different—the question becomes, is the outcome of the experimental group different than in the placebo or usual care group in a way that is unlikely to have occurred by chance. We know that there are some beneficial treatments that work and are wonderful but they cannot be tested using FDA approved clinical trial methods.

So, how does aromatic research move into the future? Bruce and Marnie will share their thoughts, insights, and possible answers in this lively and fun discussion.

Bruce is a retired pediatrician with a PhD in Holistic Healing and extensive training in aromatherapy, clinical hypnosis, crystal healing, and spiritual counseling.

He has had a distinguished career as a Naval officer, educator, researcher, and hospital administrator. He was formerly the Chief Operating Officer of a small hospital and clinic system covering Sicily, Crete, and the island of Bahrain. He was the Commanding Officer of a large infectious disease research laboratory in Cairo, Egypt, and the Commanding Officer of the USNS COMFORT, a 1,000-bed hospital ship engaged in humanitarian relief work.

Bruce is currently the editor of The Journal of Health and Human Experience, an international on-line journal exploring topics in healthcare and social justice (https://jhhe.sempervifoundation.org/).

Dr. Marian “Marnie” Reven is a passionate leader, change agent, and lover of life with her husband and family in the Appalachian region of the US. Marnie is a Professor of Nursing at West Virginia University, and both a Certified and a Registered Aromatherapist^TM. She is an advanced graduate of Aromahead Institute and completed teacher training in aromatherapy at the Aromatic Wisdom Institute.

Currently, Marnie serves as chair of the AIA Research committee where she leads a growing group as they review and share the latest in aromatic and essential oil research. Additionally, Marnie serves on other committees and taskforces and enjoys finding and recruiting new talent. Marnie founded and is president of the Aromatic Research Quality Appraisal Taskforce (ARQAT) where she leads a group of energetic and talented professionals into the future of aromatic research and reporting quality improvement.
