Carrier oils have often been used as the medium by which essential oils may be carried onto the skin and yet, carrier oils offer an array of therapeutic properties. Used either alone or in formulations with essential oils, carrier oils are the rising stars for a variety of inflammatory skin diseases as well as for specific musculoskeletal issues. Our emphasis throughout this talk is to provide with insights not only into the skin but also how carrier oils are valuable allies in maintaining the health and barrier function of the skin. We will also cover information on how carrier oils can be used to address musculoskeletal issues as well.

  • Define the term ‘carrier oil’ and provide 4 core therapeutic benefits of carrier oils
  • Describe the general structure and function of the stratum corneum and how carrier oils may support its health 
  • Discuss the benefits of carrier oils when working with inflammatory skin disorders and how to formulate with carrier oils

Jade is co-author with Sherilyn Siegmund-Roach of The Carrier Oil Palette book released in May of this year. The Carrier Oil Palette covers fixed oils, butters, herbal oils, and CO2 extracts used in aromatherapy, herbal practice, and botanical body care formulation.

Jade Shutes is an aromatherapist, herbalist, writer, researcher, aromatic and medicinal plant gardener, and an aromatic distiller.

She holds a Diploma in Holistic Aromatherapy, Holistic Massage, Anatomy and Physiology, and Reflexology from the Raworth College of Natural Medicine in Dorking, UK, and a Diploma in Aromatherapy from the International Therapist Examining board (ITEC). She also holds a certificate in herbal medicine.

An aromatherapy practitioner, researcher, and educator for over three decades, Jade is passionate about elevating the practice of aromatic medicine for a new generation of aromatherapy practitioners. She has taught at Bastyr University, Duke University, Ashmead College, San Diego Hospice, and throughout North America. Recognized as one of the vanguard of professionals who helped introduce aromatherapy to the US, she has since played an active role in the setting of standards for aromatherapy education in North America.

She is the author of ‘Aromatherapy for Bodyworkers’ and co-author of ‘The Carrier Oil Palette’ with Sherri Roach.

Sherilyn Siegmund-Roach has always been fascinated by the natural world and the miraculous complexities of both the human body and ecological systems. With her academic degrees in biology and science education, it was natural that phytotherapy would become a vital part of her life after she retired from a 24-year career as a K-12 public school math and science teacher. Sherilyn completed the clinical level Scholars Program at Aromahead Institute and is a professional member of both the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy and the Alliance of International Aromatherapists. She sits on the AIA Education Committee.

She shares her love of herbs and essential oils with her extended family (4 generations) and friends. Her clinical aromatherapy practice, Golden Heart Essentials, has included consulting and providing education for hospice programs, as well as teaching, writing, and editing for online phytotherapy academies.

In her continuing studies, Sherilyn seeks out the best ways to combine herbs and essential oils to support a holistic approach to wellness. Sherilyn’s lifelong passions for learning and sharing continue to take her down new, exciting paths every day.
